Test Shoot With Vasi

I have been building up my commercial portfolio and have started shooting a bit of fashion as well. This shoot went so well that it was really hard to make my selects. Both Amber and Vasi are so good at what they do that this shoot went off with out the slightest hiccup.

Keeping it Analog

When I first got into photography there was no Digital yet, all I shot was film on my dads old Canon AE-1. I remember when I bought my frist new camera a Canon Elan 7e, I saved up for months to buy that badboy. These days 99% of what I shoot is Digital, its faster, you can see if you have it “right” with a push of a button and the turn around for a client is much faster. But digital leaves something to be had. It lacks that physical touch, it lacks the anticipation of the unkown that film gives.

I try to shoot as much film as I can, typically with my Holga which is a cheap plastic camera that shots Medium format film. I love shooting a roll, going home to my darkroom in my basement and by hand making my images, knowing if I screw it up all will be lost. Developing your own film really is a great thing to do. It slows you down for a moment. It gives you a real sense that you MADE these photos, not just pushed a button and got instant feedback from an LCD screen. I am grateful that I come from a film background and that I can still keep things a bit analog in this digital age.

The Kicker Project

The Kicker Project was the brainchild of my good friend CT. The idea is to help underprivileged  children to learn to snowboard and in summer skateboard. I was on hand for the groups first day on snow, at Hyland Hills in Bloomington, MN.  The kids all had a blast and were learning quickly thanks to the help of two wonderful snowboard instructors, Christian and Taylor. The kids had so much fun in fact that two of them fell asleep on their van ride home.  For more information on the Kicker Project check out their Facebook page: Kicker Project

Powder Outtakes

Last week I took on the task of driving 16 hours from Minnesota all the way out to Breckenridge Colorado. I came out here to shoot with my friend and pro skier Alex Schlopy and a few other skiers. Last night Alex and I set out to get a few lifestyle shots of him as well as a couple powder shots; here are a few “outtakes” from the evening.

Most Played Rail in all of Minnesota

This past week was a treat, we received our first big snowfall of the year which was quite a bit earlier then normal.  With this fresh snow brings one thing to Minnesota skiers(as well as our silly brothers on the mono-plank) and that is URBAN.  I got the call that a few locals were at the Braemar rail. For you that do not live in MN, The Braemar rail is one of the top 5 most played, most hit rails in all the State. None the less I figured I would head out there to just grab a few shots since I had nothing better to do.  I grabbed two cameras out of my car, my Holga loaded up with Illford hp5 and my 5d with a 50 1.4.  All the photos here are from my 5d, I have yet to develop the roll of film from my Holga. Over all it was rather uneventful but was nice to get out there and shoot with some of the local kids on their first urban day of the season.

Kick Ball

I went to my good friend Georges last Kickball game of the year. I had a great time shooting the shenanigans that went down… lets just say I never thought I would see the day where someone actually got kicked out of a beer league soccer game.

Last shoot at Badlands

I hit up my buddie Nate, who owns Ello skateboards, to go shoot some skating. We decided to head over a very sweet skate spot called the badlands. Badlands was a plot of land that was bank owned due to someone defaulting on the loan. Skaters had taken over and built a few features on the lot, police were ok with us riding there as long as the trash was picked up which was very cool for something that wasn’t actually legal. Long story short less then a week after this shoot I got the terrible news that the city bought the land and had shut down the badlands. I feel its safe to say this was the last shoot at badlands.
